Jamie Howard, who was brought up on Gometra and lived for many years on Ulva, intends to take on the ‘Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge’ (aka ‘The World’s Toughest Row’) beginning in December 2023 – attempting a solo row of over 3000 miles, across the Atlantic from La Gomera in the Canary Isles to Antigua in the Caribbean. His trip has been endorsed by no less than Ranulph Fiennes.
Much of Jamie’s training is taking place in the waters around the Isle of Mull – he has already logged 200 hours on his Ocean rowing boat ‘Aoifi’ – mainly rowing up and down the Sound of Mull, including two night rows in the pitch dark, which he describes as ‘interesting and a little scary’.
Jamie is planning to row around Mull in the last two weeks of June if the weather is suitable. He is competing in aid of the Marine Charity, Openseas.org, and NASS (National Axial Spondyloarthritis Society).
