As we reported in last month’s issue, resistance to the proposed offshore wind farm ‘MachairWind’ is growing on Mull and Iona. Because the Spanish developer Scottish Power Renewables (SPR) has only included the Ross of Mull and Iona in its community engagement, it is only now that many folk in other areas of Mull are waking up to the fact that this is a huge industrial development which if it goes ahead will affect all of us in Mull, and could severely hit tourism. As we have previously pointed out, it will even be visible from the Oban-Craignure ferry.

To recap, if the Scottish Government grants a licence to the MachairWind proposal:
There will be 91 turbines, each up to 335m high and 280m wide (or up to 144 turbines at 260m tall) covering 448 km² of our coastal waters. The area covered by this development will be over 50% of the landmass of Mull, 64% of the landmass of Islay, 10 times the size of Colonsay and 51 times the size of Iona… more in the printed issue
