Back in 2019 in the city of Dundee, John Fyffe MBE of the Weaver Incorporation of Dundee and Dr. Frances Stevenson, senior lecturer at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, conceived and developed the idea of creating a series of tapestries depicting Dundee’s heritage and culture. Around 140 volunteer stitchers worked on 35 panels, each one roughly 1m square, designed by Andrew Crummy MBE, the artist responsible for The Great Tapestry of Scotland, and Dr Stevenson. With subjects ranging from Nature and Whaling to Michael Marra, Dancehalls and Sporting Dundee, the panels reflected the vast industrial and cultural heritage of the city and its people.
Amongst these panels is one dedicated to Theatre & Writers and this one has a further tale to tell. It came to Mull in March 2023 and over the next seven months was stitched by 5 members of the Craignure craft group and on one evening, a visitor from Singapore who took the chance to add her stitches to the work.
None of us had a clue what would happen next. We said, “Now what?” quickly followed by, “Let’s do one for Craignure.”…. more in the printed issue
