From 24th to 26th October the Western Isles Hotel in Tobermory and nearby hotels in the town welcomed 48 fans for a fifth IKWIG reunion, this one the largest of all. “I Know Where I’m Going!”, the masterpiece by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, has been called one of the greatest films ever made. During the weekend “Casablanca”, “Rashomon” and “Lawrence of Arabia” were mentioned in the same breath, and the Director Martin Scorsese has called the film one of the major influences on his cinematography.
IKWIG was shot on Mull in 1944, though the leading male star Roger Livesey, playing Torquil Macneill of Kiloran, never left the studios in Denham due to a simultaneous acting contract on the stage in London. So, Mull scenes with him are brilliantly shot with a double or in reconstructed sets based on Mull settings. The film was first screened in 1945… more in the printed issue
