This year’s festival of chamber music, otherwise known as MoM, was a true delight. Put together one established chamber quartet, 8 young professional musicians and place them on the Isle of Mull for a week to rehearse and perform together, and as festival manager Richard Jeffcoat puts it ‘magic happens’.
Artistic Directors the Doric Quartet are world renowned and well respected for their impassioned interpretation, and due to their style of directing, one of equals rather than teacher/pupil, this quickly rubs off on the younger players, with impressive results in a very short time.
This year we were treated to works by Mendelssohn (of course!), Benjamin, Haydn, Janacek, Mozart, Schoenberg, Schubert and others. In particular the Janacek piece caught my attention – very moving in its beauty and passion – but I’m sure we all had our favourites... more in the printed issue
