The annual festival of chamber music which is Mendelssohn on Mull has survived many a crisis to have reached its 36th year. In early summer, when it became apparent that artistic directors the Doric Quartet would be unable to attend, this year’s event looked to be in doubt. However the ideal replacements were found in the shape of the Maxwell Quartet, who by some serendipitous miracle were available for the week which has long been in the calendar for this year’s festival. [It is true that they did have a concert in Edinburgh on the Saturday morning, so only arrived in Mull on Saturday afternoon, shortening the available practice time, which makes their musical achievement with this year’s young performers all the more impressive.]… more in the printed issue
