Mendelssohn on Mull Festival

This year’s festival took place a little later than usual, from 19th-23rd September, but was well worth waiting for. We were treated to works by Beethoven, Britten, Elgar, Glazunov, Haydn, Janacek, Mozart, Tchaikovsky and of course Mendelssohn, played as usual by a mixture of young classical musicians and their mentors, the members of the Doric Quartet.
As Jennifer Henderson, one of the trustees, said at the final concert – ‘incredibly, the musicians seem to improve year on year – this year’s music has been phenomenal!’ Indeed it was a sign of how competent these young musicians are, that for the Tchaikovsky sextet played in the final concert, the unusual decision was made for the youngsters to take the parts of 1st violin, viola and cello, rather than the more experienced players... more in the printed issue
