On Friday 13th and Saturday 14th September, the Mull Mòd returned to Tobermory. The Mòd is a celebration of Gaelic language and culture, as children and adults compete, often in preparation for the National Mòd in October. With over 500 entries, including solo singing, duets, small groups, poetry and story recitation, conversation, literature, piping, piano, fiddle, accordion and artwork competitions as well as the popular action songs and choir competitions, Tobermory was buzzing over the two days. Because of the overwhelming number of entries, the Mòd now extends beyond the main street, using the Scout Hall, Glen Iosal, the Parish Church and even Gus Stewart’s gallery as additional venues! A minibus service helped to shuttle people around town so that they could reach their competitions without being completely out of breath. We were delighted to have three preschool action songs, and seven primary school action songs on Friday morning. The primary action song competition in Aros Hall was won by Mrs. Spillane’s Tobermory Primary 4/5/6 class, with Lochdonhead and Ulva Primary schools placing 2nd and 3rd. At lunchtime, children gathered on the beach to sing a couple of songs together accompanied by guitar and conducted by Janet Campbell, an activity that we were glad to bring back this year as the tides were more co-operative than last year!… more in the printed issue
