Spring Music

During March the Mendelssohn on Mull Festival brought its ‘Spring Music’ to Mull for the fourth time (Last year the quartet became a trio because of Covid, which entailed a last-minute programme change! )
Readers will probably be familiar with the MOM festival, which has been running for over 30 years and currently boasts the world-renowned Doric String Quartet as Artistic Directors. The Spring Music is by way of a spin-off from the main festival – members of the Doric hand-pick young musicians to form a string quartet, but this time they come to Mull and live and work together for a week without any mentoring, performing concerts at various venues. This intense process has in the past created some amazing quartets who are still working together. This year’s musicians were violinist David Shaw from Wales, viola player Elise Hiron from Switzerland, the Malaysian cellist Nigel Thean and also on the violin Valentin Sanchez Pinero from Spain, who was visiting Scotland for the first time! In view of the amazing cold but sunny weather all week, an attempt was made to convince him that it never rains in Scotland and we always have blue skies.
